Lace Hankies or Handkerchiefs have changed from a utilitarian object to a rememberance of times past.  In other words no one wants to wash used handkerchiefs when Kleenex is available.

However, that has not always been true and when a handkerchief was essential they were decorated and elaborated in all sorts of ways.  They were also small enough they made good practice pieces for young girls learning to make lace, do needlework, tat, etc.  As a result there is a lot of lovely vintage lacework available.

There are many vintage lace auctions on Ebay and they almost never bring good money.  There is way more supply than demand.  A couple hundred years ago handmade lace was a huge cottage industry in Europe.  Old German folk art frequently depicts lacemakers at work.  The development of machine made lace destroyed handmade lacemaking as an industry and turned it into a hobby.  Unfortunately, the machine made lace is very good and you  have to be an expert to tell it apart.

As a result, even though I think old handmade lace is special I can't reliably identify it from auction pictures (even good pictures).  It requires my wife, who has made some lace herself, to reliably be able to tell handmade lace from machine made lace.

Listed below are some of the current Ebay auctions for lace handkerchiefs with some filtering added to improve the relevance of the results.  Clicking one of those links will take you directly to that auction.
